Does anyone know what type of aluminum is used for guitar parts? I'm wanting to fabricate a few things myself but I'm unsure of which aluminum to use.
Thanks.

HI,

This is pretty general question. Makers have used a lot of varieties of aluminum. For instance, Veleno used Almag in his necks, an alloy of aluminum and magnesium. Matt Bastin uses 6061 and 7050, I use pretty much all 6061.

The 7050 and 6061 are fairly easy to find, good luck on the Almag though. Unless you intend to cast your parts, finding Almag is tough. You can buy 7050 and 6061 in plate. sheet or extruded from pretty much any metal supplier.

Hope this helps,
Greg Bailey

Thanks,
That answered my question. I'll be fabricating prototypes for bridges and nuts and I wanted to avoid any pitfalls as a result of using the wrong type. Are both 7050 and 6061 easily machined using common woodworking tools? Is there anything I should be aware of? Also, do you happen to know which types of brass are good for guitar parts?
