I am attempting a prototype that I've been thinking about for a while. The idea is use steel instead of aluminum (or wood). I'm using mild steel, here you can see the initial frame. the fret board is a Vaccaro surplus unit. the tuning machines will be fitted to a pair of ears that I'll weld to the frame's head that extends past the fretboard.
p
The basic frame pictured here is quite light, 2.25 lbs. a bare strat body is 3.25 lbs, if I were to fit it to that body, I'd have 4.5 lbs. to use for tuning machines, pickups, bridge, misc before I hit the travis bean and kramer weight of 10 lbs. (thats my goal, to not be heavier).
p
i'll probably shape some wood inserts to round out the neck, Kramer style. motive for using steel instead of aluminum is due to the limitation of my tools.

this is what I have in mind. I'm not going to use the original TB Artist body, but I like this shape quite a bit.

Things seem to be shaping up rather nicely, gtrshp. Many would think you were insane for even attempting to use that much steel. I however think you are just crazy... in the good way.
We probably often use our limitations be it tools, skills, patiece, cost to decide what direction our ideas take. And mine usually make a few turns along the way. But some of them are actually good ideas.
You may actually be on to something here. Or just crazy.

P.S. I can't wait!
