HI All,
I've been trying to sell an all aluminum Strat on eBay. I made an aluminum neck with an aluminum and brass motorcycle inlay, it comes with a case. I sold a guitar similar to this one about 2 years ago and I easily got my price, but this one was on eBay twice and it just sat there. This one ended for less than what I've seen bodies alone sell for. If any of you have time, could you look at this auction and tell me what I'm doing wrong? Is there something wrong with the guitar? One of the problems could be that it is a Harley Davidson "custom" piece. Not so much that its aluminum (which can be a turn off for some people for being cold or what have you, especially with the aluminum body), but the fact that it has a bike inlay and HD emblem below the bridge. A lot like custom cars, its hard to find a buyer who feels that the guitar fits them visually, despite how good it may sound or play. Someone may love the concept of an aluminum guitar but would not want to be seen on stage or elsewhere with it if they are not a rider or a HD fan. Like a custom car its a piece of personalized work...you always see custom cars selling below what their builders put into them, especially so if they are really customized beyond (crazy paint job, lots of personal effects under the hood or in the interior) what's considered a standard modification - lowering, chopping, etc.
My only advice would be to try and expand your listing - get on craigslist, the local classifieds, things like that. Someone, somewhere will be willing to pay for your guitar what its worth, and hopefully more than that! It just takes the right buyer, the right instrument and the right amount of disposable cash to sell something...you may just have to be patient in waiting for all that stuff to align.

That's a beautiful guitar you have there. I love what you did with the neck. The problem to me is what it is, and isn't.
It is a beautifully made guitar, finished professionally and I think anyone would be proud to buy it. But the person must also like Harleys. I drive Hondas motorcycles, I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone. Also the body is dented, as those bodies are prone to do, they are not very forgiving. (that is my main concern about those bodies) Again, I love that neck you made.
What it isn't is a strat. The official Fender aluminum bodied (tie died and such) limited edition guitars are going for less (the last I checked e-bay about those was last year) than yours. The mustang one for considerably more. But those are real and official strats. And yours is not a custom guitar, it 's a customised one. Yours will be viewed as a parts mutt from purists. And in the $2000 range, alot more people are purists than not.
That said, the right person will come around for your beautiful guitar. It is worth $2000 IMO, but you may have to wait for a while for the right buyer.

It's a niche piece. By doing it up with the logo and bike inlay, you are turning off a lot of potential buyers. Unless you are building a custom piece for an individual, I recommend you keep it simple and understated.
I am the owner of the TB clone you built last year and I can vouch for your workmanship (love my guitar), but many people are leery of dropping $2k on an unknown builder...on Ebay no less. If it is at all possible I think you should concentrate on TB clones. If you can sell them for cheaper than Electrical does (as you did with mine), I think you can get rid of a bunch.

I wouldnt say your doing anything wrong, its a pretty specific piece, but with that being said perhaps the person who would buy just hasnt seen it yet. I have seen many people comment on not liking the girl being in the pictures of your auctions, but to each their own and if you like that leave it.

Please keep the Model. Everybody likes girls and she looks great with or without the guitar. If I could afford the guitar I would love to own it. ... except for the harley stoff. I even love harleys (cant afford either). But I dont want my guitar to say any thing but Cool. You might consider reworking the guitar and trying again. Even the strat theme might be a little generic for people like me who love something a little different.

P.S. I'd pay money for a nice 8by10 of your model holding the rework. Might be worth a lot someday when your rich and famous.
